Burn, Radiation, Burn

Have just learned that they are incinerating radioactive materials at the plant just down the road from my house. Fan-tab-u-lastic. There are three elementary schools, four preschools, five daycare centers, two junior highs, and one high school less than a mile from this place. Apparently it isn’t enough for Yokohama to poison the children by serving radioactive beef in school lunches….

When I think how careless these reptiles are with the lives and health of our children, that they have increased my children’s likelihood of developing cancer by even an infinitesimal amount, it makes me so inhumanly angry that even The Incredible Hulk would think I have a problem. And then after the briefest of moments, indescribably sad: for all of the innocents stuck in Fukushima, for the families that will eventually suffer and be tortured by the “what-ifs” left from the decisions we are making today.

It’s ironic now to think back to how RELIEVED I felt when the house stopped lurching on March 11. It’s been a slow realization, but nothing will ever really be the same, will it?

Update: The plan to use this sludge and ash in a project for reclaiming land near Honmoku (which is where the monied Hamakkos reside) has been delayed. So it’s still sitting in a big pile down the road from us. GREAT. Am tempted to bike over there and check that it’s covered, but then again I’m not sure I want to know…
