Pins and Needles

He will be home any moment now, and I will know. How it went, what we’re dealing with, whether it will be a battle or a brief, unpleasant episode in our otherwise peaceful existence.

I can’t understand why it takes so long to walk 400 meters. Is he dawdling on purpose? Has he been kept after? Is he okay?

Pins and needles, when waiting for a child who left this morning with a loaded letter in his backpack, feels more like nails and spears or some contraption devised for the Inquisition.

My fingers aren’t crossed, exactly, but I’m completely tied up and tangled inside.
