Road to Ruin?

Me Too has been saying that she wants to start taking swimming lessons again.

There’s a reason we stopped: it’s a pain in my ass. The only day she can go is Wednesday at 3. That’s all well and good for HER; she gets out of preschool at 11:30.

The problem, of course, is that I have another child we have to drag with us. He “gets out” of school at 2. The quotation marks tell the rest, right? Supposedly school ends at 2, but little boys are subject to the whims of the natural world. He may get distracted by a stone on the sidewalk that he’s passed a billion times and never noticed until I need him to hurry home. There may be a praying mantis looking at him funny, forcing him to take the long way qound. Perhaps the earth is turned on a peculiar point on its axis that day.

He never gets back before 2:30, which is the deadline by which we must leave or be late to swimming. This is a catastrophe because you have to walk your child into the pool area if you miss the locker room pick-up. At the entrance to the pool room is an automatic shower.

Needless to say, I’ve never seen anyone be late.

I’m kind of enjoying our lazy Wednesday afternoons as they are, yk?

For most of the past year I’ve been tearing around like a bat out of hell with it’s head cut off, prepping pool stuff and getting dinner ready ahead of time. Since we’re going to all the effort to go anyway, I put Me First into the next class. He never wants to go. You’d think I was forcing him into the fiery pits of hell, not a heated indoor pool.

I’m trying to persuade Me Too to join the sports center’s hip hop class instead. It’s closer and by the park so Me First could play while we wait.

But then again, adding another activity may be the first step on the road to ruining my Wednesdays.

Any thoughts?

Swimming is more important but Hip Hop is probably more fun – but that said I imagine she would be in a hip hop class that isn’t just little kids beginning out. The girls in Shou’s class have all been doing it for five years plus and while he does LOVE IT (and all the attention he gets), he kind of tunes off when they do hard numbers. Althought the teacher assures me he is picking up,about as fast as a snail, but picking it up none the less :) He also has a 17 year old girl who thinks he’s great, stands beside him and teaches him little bits in the breaks! Good Luck. Wednesdays are our hell day here too.

Both swimming and the hip-hop class are run by the city, so it’s a 10 week course and then it’s done. For hip-hop, kids who haven’t taken a course yet get first priority, so A shouldn’t be the only new kid there. In-class performance on the last day, but that’s it.
